French term

ventouse

French to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation water abstraction system
Sorry, yet another term from this text about the water abstraction system for the power plant.

All the entries for ventouse in the glossary seem to refer to electrical solenoid valves, which may be right here, but I'm not sure. I only know the word in connection with childbirth and I'm pretty sure that doesn't apply!

Any guidance gratefully received.

DEF – Appareil placé en un point haut d'une conduite sous pression, afin d'évacuer l'air qui pourrait y séjourner. Source DEF – An air valve placed at the summit of a pipeline to release air. Source
CONT – The development of air pockets in pipelines and appurtenances can severely inhibit the efficient flow of water through them. These pockets normally occur at summits in pipelines and appurtenances. Air release valves are usually the most effective means of correcting air accumulation problems. Source

See these links which clearly describe the system within the context of water supply: you will see that they mention isolating valves and air release valves in the same context.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Dominique Lelievre : A ventouse involves a partial vacuum. http://www.axesindustries.com/glossaire.asp/tri/fed/lettre/v... points to "sucker" in a water supply system context.

I am sorry but your context is not "a water supply system context". Axes industries specialises in mechanical and electro-mechanical systems - hardly water-specific and is not as reliable a reference as Termium which only lists "suckers" as hand tools .

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Helen - this fits in the context."

vent

It can also be a "vent"

But I cannot be sure that this is what applies here.
