Thanks David - this was the impression I had. Engineeer's blue was the term I'd come up with but I wasn't sure how to use it succinctly in the rest of the sentence.

It's a check in which a blue dye is used to visualize the contact at a mating surface or seating between two components. I'll answer if I find the customary term ("blue dye test/check" don't get enough hits)

I think it's easy enough to turn the sentence round like this to work it in.
