French term

DAO / CAO

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering EN-UK
DAO = Dessin Assisté par Ordinateur
CAO = Conception assistée par Ordinateur

However, I have the problem that both these terms are generally translated as CAD in English. The other problem is that "design" and "drawing" both begin with the letter D. How can I differentiate between the above acronyms? Do they actually relate to different software?

B D Finch (asker) Oct 29, 2018:
@Johannes Thanks Johannes. Afraid that "Computer Aided Conception" seems to be Deutchlish. I used my original idea of "CAD (drawing)" and "CAD (design)".
Johannes Gleim Oct 29, 2018:
Hello BD Hope that CAC is what you are looking for.
B D Finch (asker) Oct 24, 2018:
@SafeTex Thanks. Unfortunately it doesn't work in my context. CADD is the academic subject that covers the use of CAD software. However, my text is specifying the software, not the academic subject.

@Tony I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person who finds this problem! I'm wondering about the solution of using "CAD (drawing)" and "CAD (design)".
Tony M Oct 24, 2018:
@ Asker I have come across this problem, and seen various solutions used. generally, people seem to try and keep the earlier term 'CAD' sacrosanct, and attempt to fudge round the other; I've seen variations on 'CADes' etc., and have also seen the reverse, 'CAD' (drafting or drawing) referred to as 'CADr'
Neither of these solutions seems to me ideal, but they, or variations on the same, are all I've ever managed to find.

Unfortunately both articles (1) and (2) are linked to the following (3), which itself redirects to the 2nd one (CAD) only:

Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computer systems (or workstations) to aid in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design.[1] CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications through documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing.[2] CAD output is often in the form of electronic files for print, machining, or other manufacturing operations. The term CADD (for Computer Aided Design and Drafting) is also used.

We can conclude that DAO corresponds to CAD. But is CAO the 1st stage of CAD or anything else?

is linked to:

Electronic design automation (EDA), also referred to as electronic computer-aided design (ECAD),[1] is a category of software tools for designing electronic systems such as integrated circuits and printed circuit boards. The tools work together in a design flow that chip designers use to design and analyze entire semiconductor chips. Since a modern semiconductor chip can have billions of components, EDA tools are essential for their design.

Up to now I thought that that the English equivalent for CAO could be found by searching Wikipedia, but found nothing than "EDA".

I now used Goggle and entered the literal translation "Computer Aided Conception"and Goggle returned a lot of hits, e.g.:

Profound skills in computer-aided methods are of growing importance for every engineer in all fields of professional activity. The four-semester programme Master of Science in Computer Aided Conception and Production in Mechanical Engineering (CAME) is designed to broaden and increase the knowledge and practical use of computer-aided simulation techniques in mechanical engineering. This programme specifically addresses the needs of the practising mechanical engineer. Its focus lies on the development and application of computer-aided methods and systems at all stages of product development, from the initial conception of machines to the manufacturing process.

BTW: I had this idea from the very beginning (I think having heard of it some years ago), but was confused by the impossibility to retrieve it with Wikipédia. Sorry for not having googled before, but I am still on holidays and have only my smartphone with me.
Note from asker:
Thanks Johannes. That's a possibility that I'll have to check out with the client, because I'm not sure that design of electronic systems circuit boards is involved. However, it might be.
No, it doesn't seem to involve circute boards. However, 2D drawings are required.
Peer comment(s):

agree John Fossey : Computer Aided Design rarely means producing drawings any more. Most designs are produced in 3D and a drawing is rarely made, with the design usually being transmitted as a digital file, not a drawing.
