Discussion

B D Finch (asker) Apr 9, 2018:
Thanks to Alison and Daryo I can't award points because you both modestly posted your answers as reference entries. I think the one I went with was either "square bar rails" or "square section rails". 4 virtual points to Alison.
B D Finch (asker) Apr 4, 2018:
@Tony That's quite likely. Any idea what they are called?
Tony M Apr 4, 2018:
Could it be...? ... the square, or more usually rectangular, 'frames' with a wheel at each corner that run on / in these rails — they need to b 2-dimensional so they won't skew and fall off!

carriage

I'm mainly suggesting this because I can't think of anything else it could be.

The carriage rides along the rails and carries the hoist which, in turn, does the actual lifting. The hoist may also be mounted on some kind of rail to provide movement across the width of the main rails. When combined with the movement of the carriage along the main rails, this allows any point under the crane to be reached.

I think Alison is right. I'll leave this answer here for historical purposes but my confidence is a lot less now.

Could it be a way of saying rails de roulement type carré?

Not sure, but a few findings.

The German is the original in these links.

http://update.hadef.de/cms/pdfs/b_ehh_f.pdf
Set the crane down so that the wheels are resting on the crane rail of the crane beam.
The wheel flanges of the running wheels must be placed correctly on the crane rail - do not jam.

poutres support
butées d’extrémité
très souvent poutres horizontales
[Nice sketch here]

Designed to run on a 50x50 or 40x40 square bar (rail).

Runway systems designed for top running cranes include a rail on which the end trucks run. This rail is fastened to the top of the runway beam either by welds (for square bar rails) or hook bolts (for ASCE rail).

Thanks Alison: very helpful.
Peer comments on this reference comment:

agree Tony M : That last example seems pretty convincing, differentiating as it does between the 'runway beam' and the 'rails'

Thanks Daryo, that's excellent confirmation of my translation of this as "square-section rails".
