since I agree with Cristian, "upgrades entail major version changes," is there any more context that indicates the size or complexity of these changes? big or small?

Basically, the preparation is to install a system update.

The reason I believe it is an update and not an upgrade is that upgrades entail major version changes, usually requiring a parallel run before implementation.

upgrading

To upgrade=mettre à niveau, tandis que to update=mise à jour.
