chain of custody
Seems to fit here.
Further, the direct approach could prove quite burdensome for the ultimate investor and would impose substantial burdens on intermediaries at all levels in the chain of custody.

Or possibly, alternately, "shareholding chain."

: custody = conservation, not détention./ 'Shareholding chain' is good. 'Chain of holding' is also perfectly good.

"If the tax is due by one of the interposed companies in the chain of ownership of a real estate asset, all the companies located between the real estate and the person liable for the tax are jointly liable for payment"
Translated as:
"Dans l'hypothèse où la taxe est due par l'une des sociétés
interposées dans la chaîne de détention d'un bien
immobilier, toutes les sociétés situées entre le bien
immobilier et le redevable de la taxe sont solidaires de
son paiement."
I'm somewhat proud of this answer, given that I can't speak a word of French! Ooh La La!

: awfully confident for someone who "can't speak a word of French"! :-O
BTW, Asker's context is not real estate. ;-) // Ah, youth!

Not really, I've simply shown how it can mean "chain of ownership" in this context - real estate can still be considered as "business/commerce". In addition, the other respondents answer is a variant of mine, so maybe there's something in it :-)
