chambre d'été

French to English Other Architecture
This is a description of a room at the back of a house. Could it be a veranda or a porch? Is it enclosed?

Discussion

Michele Fauble Jul 12, 2005:
Yes, I agree, award points to the most helpful answer. BTW, it is not necessary to decline the other answers. (And I understand that the decline option is going to be dropped.)
RHELLER Jul 12, 2005:
yes, I agree w/Sue: most helpful answer :-)
Dr Sue Levy (X) Jul 12, 2005:
I think it is customary to award points to the most helpful answer, whether or not you use the translation offered. It doesn't matter - I don't know what to do with the points anyway :-)
Non-ProZ.com Jul 12, 2005:
Dear Sue,
Can I give you points without accepting your answer? Of course, your answer was the best help, it just wasn't a "covered terrace", that was my problem. Can I change it so that you get 4 points for the website? I would gladly do it. Thanks
Dr Sue Levy (X) Jul 12, 2005:
And my research skills are not even worth one tiny point. Oh well, live and learn!
Non-ProZ.com Jul 11, 2005:
Thanks Sue, I don't know how I missed these pictures! Now I know what it looks like, I have to decide what word to use.
Dr Sue Levy (X) Jul 11, 2005:
Non-ProZ.com Jul 11, 2005:
The house is La Maison blanche in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Le Courbusier's first independant work. I checked all the websites, if I had a photo of the room I would know if it was enclosed or not. I can contact the archetict who did the renovations.
Dr Sue Levy (X) Jul 10, 2005:
Perhaps you could give a little more information Linda.

covered terrace

This one (très chic) is on the terrace:

It really is meant for sleeping out in the summer. But it could be a partially enclosed verandah also. Where is this house?

This looks like a covered terrace to me :-) and is quite separate from the main building. But I would check to see whether it is really this that your text is referring to.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Michele Fauble : The text refers to it as an 'outdoor room' (chambre extérieure).

Sorry misunderstood you - yes it's referred to as a chambre extérieure and a chambre d'été - but I understood that Asker wanted to know what it was, porch etc.

neutral Michele Fauble : More than a porch, an 'outdoor room' (currently becoming very popular). //Yes, a porch furnished like a room (e.g. with a bed) becomes an 'outdoor room'.

FYI a porch is outdoor and moustiquaires are screens
agree Dr Sue Levy (X) : IMO according to what the French call a "chambre d'été" must be a porch or verandah or terrace arranged for sleeping out in the summer. In Oz it's called it a sleepout!

Summer room/guest room/spare room

Declined
Basically it an ordinary room used often as a bedroom but you change the decoration in summer or winter or just according to the season.
It could easily have a verandah or porch if the house has been built with one added on to that particular room. It's used for guests or as a spare room for anything. It does not necessarily have extra sun in summer. That would depend on exposition.

Following your note, this house is protected by UNESCO and has been renovated but pictures are not yet available. I would go for Summer Room still. You would have to check with the architect to find out if they\'ve added a verandah or porch.
