Although the preferred path of venting was from the suppression chamber, in order to benefit from the removal of radioisotopes by the water pool, the vent path included another route from the drywell.

I have seen many different usages of "by". However, this one seems odd to me. Is it like when you that "this book is written by Mark Twin?"

Agree with philgoddard's interpretation I agree with Phil's interpretation. So, my suggested rephrasing is:

"Venting from the suppression chamber would offer the benefit of radioisotopes being removed by the water pool. The alternative route from the drywell (provided as a backup), would not offer that benefit."

However, please note that this is a linguistic interpretation only. I don't have any specialist knowledge in this field.

It does seem odd... I'm no nuclear scientist, so excuse my ignorance, but to me it sounds like that particular section is saying that the waterpool removes the radioisotopes? If that is the case, wouldn't it be better to say, "via the waterpool"?

Vent means to release or discharge liquid, gas and etc.
suppresion chamber is a champer used to reduce reactor pressure
Radioisotopes is a form of chemical elements that sends out radiation, therefore, it is dangerous.
Water pool is simply a pool containing water.
Vent path is the route used to discharge sth.
Drywell is a drainage pit lined with loose stonework for the leaching of liquid waste. It is a part of nuclear reactors

Further context would be useful such as the text that comes before and after the fragment you have posted.

This is not general, converstation, greetings... You need someone who either understands what venting, suppression chamber, radioisotopes, water pool, vent path and drywell are, or a person who has time to research the information.

philgoddrad I thought this is a very straightforward question for native-speakers of English!
philgoddard Jun 6, 2016:
I don't know much about this subject, but I think they meant to say "removal by the water pool of radioisotopes". If I'm right, the sentence is not quite grammatically correct, though this syntax is often used in speech.
