izza bella (asker) Nov 30, 2010:
This comes from "Nurse Anesthesia Pocket Guide", from the Chapter "Pulmonary Function Testing". This part reads:
MVV - Volume of air expired in a specific time period during maximal effort; tests a subject's respiratory stamina. Requires pt to breathe for 10-15 sec as deeply and as fast as possible. > 80% predicted is normal; <50% predicts decreased ability to CDB post-op.
PEF Peak Expiratory Flow - maximum...
That's all I've got.
Stephanie Ezrol Nov 30, 2010:
I don't think that CDB means cued breathing test. Is your question about CDB or about cued breathing test? If it is about Cued Breathing Test, please give more context -- a full sentence if possible and some text before and after.

Coughing and deep breathing

I think that CDB probably refers to coughing and deep breathing in this context. CDB is used as an acronym, and is a post operative issue.

I believed that they are referring to an increased probability of problems with coughing and deep breathing.

HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES:

TITLE: Prevention of postoperative pulmonary complications with CPAP, incentive spirometry, and conservative therapy.

EXCERPT: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) administered at intervals with a mask and incentive spirometry (IS) were compared with a regimen of coughing and deep breathing (CDB) to determine which promoted the most rapid recovery of pulmonary function after upper abdominal operations in 65 adults.

THE IDEA WITHOUT THE ACRONYM:

deep breathing and coughing exercises,
movements used to improve pulmonary gas exchange or to maintain respiratory function, especially after prolonged inactivity or general anesthesia. Incisional pain after surgery in the chest or abdomen often inhibits normal respiratory movements.

FROM A UNIVERSITY WEBSITE

Pillows
Pillows will cushion your chest incision as well as help with pain during coughing and deep breathing exercises. Continue to use the pillow at home to find a more comfortable position as you sleep, as well as during your coughing and breathing exercises.
