agree Hervé du Verle : usually indicating that the patient has sufficient consciousness or the ability to breathe without a machine... But occasionally not a so good idea...

yes.. or that the patient is very disturbed... agitated... etc...
agree Will Matter : Yup. Self-removal of the tube, in other words. Happens for a variety of reasons, most aren't good. Nice answer, though.
