What is the definition of "run-in"?

initial drug treatment

medication given initially, possibly as a higher loading dose to attain a certain drug levels . Then the maintenance dosage is usually lower if this distinction is being made.

neutral Maksym Nevzorov : You've described the concept of "loading dose"; "run-in" therapy is a broader concept. The situation you've given is only one of possibilities of what "run-in" means. However, I do agree w/your statement "initial drug treatment" that's the usual meaning

disagree lysander canlas : by chance this discussion came up in a 'net search. au contraire, the run-in period is a stabilizing period before starting a subject into a clinical trial. the run-in medication, during that period, is a placebo or drug that will not affect the trial.

Interesting point. In any event, the meaning of "run-in medication" is 'initial drug treatment'. It's nature may be determined by the particular study parameters.
