population density

Hi folks,
I'm translating an article (Italian > American English) that mentions population density. Here it is listed as people per hectare, specifically 1250 people/hectare.
How do I calculate this? Inhabitants per square mile?
And what would this figure be? I'm a total mess at arithmetic.
Thanks!

1 hectare = 10000 m2 or 100m x 100m
1km2 = 100 ha (1000m x 1000m = 100 x 10000 m2)
1 sqm = 1.609 km2
Hence 1250 h/ha2 = 160.9 x 1250 h/ha2 = 201,125 h/sqm

it depends on what you population density refers to:
a city : in m2 (square meter)
a rural state: in square miles
a strongly densified area (suburb for instance): km2 (square kilometers)

in answer to Natalie\'s comment:
1 sqm = 1.609 km x 1.609 km = 2.58881 sqm
hence your answer is 1250 h/ha = 2.58881 x 100 x 1250 h/sqm = 323,610.125 h/sqm
sorry for that

and that should probably be shown as 325,000 p/sqm (rounding is compulsory)

: Yes, if there are 100 hectares in a kilometer, then there are 125000 inhabitants per square kilometer; 125000 * 1.609 = 201125 inhabitants per square mile. :-) // No there isn't, that's why I agreed. ;-)

cheers Derek, but there is no difference between 1250 x 160.9 and 125,000 x 1.609, is there? lol. ;-) sorry, I got too complicated for me, all of a sudden

: Why is 1 sqm = 1.609 km2 ? 1 Mile = 1.609 km, but 1 Square mile = 2.589 km2, so your calculations are wrong|||Yep, and it costed you some 100000 people ;-)

One square kilometre is equal to 100 hectares:

I think that \"people per square kilometre\" is internationally used.

1250 people/ha = 323749 people/sq mi (125000 people/sq km)
I'm afraid Hacene's figures are somewhat incorrect :-(
1 sq km = 100 ha, i.e. if we have 1250 people/hectare, then there is 1250 x 100 = 125000 people/sq km
Now, let's take a look at the units conversion table (please keep in mind that there are US and Imperial units; we should use US units in our calculations):
http://www.thermexcel.com/english/tables/unit_con.htm
1 Square mile (sq mi) = 2.589998 km2
Thus, if there is 125000 people/km2, then there is 125000 x 2.589998 = 323749 people/sq mile
Now, which units should you use in your translation? I have looked through various American encyklopedias, articles etc. In most cases the population density is specified per sq mile with the number per sq km shown in parentheses (or vice versa). Hence my suggestion: use both numbers in the upper line, i.e. 323749/sq mi (125000/sq km).
Here is an example (one of many; this one describes the population density of Denver, Colorado):
The population density is 1,396.5/km2 (3,616.8/mi2).

: but note that if the per ha density is only given to three significant figures (125...), then the conversion should also be given to 3 sig fig, i.e. 324,000.// Possibly 4 sig fig, but unlikely IMO, would need to see article.

Not quite, David: in 1250 zero is significant figure too
