English term

don’t need / need

Non-PRO English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
I am puzzled by the alternatives in an English language test question:

"Task: Choose correct words:
We don’t need / need to hand this in until next week."

"don’t need / need" are written in italics as alternative options.

In my opinion, both sentences are grammatically correct.
- We don’t need to hand this in until next week.
- We need to hand this in until next week.
Is there any reason why one would be more correct than the other?

TIA!

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Vesna Zivcic (asker) Mar 29, 2023:
The question is taken from a CUP test material for high schools.
My first instinct was to choose "don't need", but the answer key specified "need" as the correct answer. Therefore I thank all the native speakers for their effort here to clarify it. It's then a double mistake :)
Chris Says Bye Mar 29, 2023:
Need ... until is incorrect English. Need to hand it in next week or by next week is correct.

not...until

The construction here is "not...until"

We don't need to hand this in until next week

OR

We need to hand this in [or - we have to hand this in] **by** next week

If you had "we need to hand this in until next week", it refers to a continuous action (e.g. "we need to keep stirring the eggs until they are well-mixed) - which obviously doesn't make sense here.

Until vs by

The explanation lies in the use of the word "until" which în this example can only be used with "we don't need"

It is incorrect to say we need to hand it in UNTIL next week. The correct version would be " we need to hand it in BY next week.

So:
We don't need to hand it in until next week
We need to hand it in by next week.

Is it more clear? Hope it helps

neutral AllegroTrans : This is essentially the same answer as Jennifer's, with which you could have agreed

Yes absolutely. When I started typing there were no answers. Jennifer published her answer first. I think the main goal here is to be helpful, and 2 people can explain the same thing in different ways, no harm done. No need for judgement here.
agree Chris Says Bye : @AllegroTrans, they were clearly typing at the same time...
