English term

provide visibility

English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
A chemicals manufacturer (ABC) has sent out a request to transport companies to submit their bids for transport services. In its document about general transport requirements, ABC company says:

‘’Geographic coverage is a major parameter and preference will be given to Candidate showing ability to handle multiple loading points and to cover a large number of destination points. Company ABC provides visibility to the entire non contracted and/or non compliant distribution network and allows the Candidate to bid on a large portion of the network leading to significant potential cost reductions.

Moreover, we stress upon the fact that preference will be given to offers covering as much as possible: EVENTS, LOT’s and SUBLOT’s specified in the RFQ.’’

Could you tell me what ‘’provide visibility’’ means in this context?

Thank you

My suggestion is based primarily on the context, and the meaning of "the entire non contracted and/or non compliant distribution network," and secondarily of the use of the phrase "provide visibility" in other texts. I would suggest that the ABC company is putting together an RFQ in order to bring the the entire non contracted and/or non compliant distribution network either into compliance or under some sort of general contract (a general contract as opposed to hiring transport for one or a few transport jobs at a time).

Therefore the visibility being provided is to the transport company in order to allow them to "to bid on a large portion of the network leading to significant potential cost reductions," which they would not be able to do unless that entirelty of that non compliant and/or non contracted work was made visible.

HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES WITH THE SENSE OF PROVIDING FULL INFORMATION:

The Sigma Service Profile Manager is used by CSRs as a service order entry portal at Cable One for Voice telephony services. This application also provides visibility to the entire lifecycle of the subscriber's order, invaluable to track and manage orders from the call center.

This PLC control system is free-standing but includes reporting capability to a SCADA monitoring system, which provides visibility to the entire electrical distribution system at this data-communications facility.

agree Tony M : Yes, that would probably make the most sense: "we won't keep any secrets from you about our use of transport" (though I kinda thought that might have been rather 'transparency'?)

Thanks Tony. I also thought about transparency, but I think transparency has taken on a different connotation these days with discussions about financial transparency or lack of financial transparency.

If I'm unerstanding this correctly, I think it means that company ABC will 'publicize' the Candidate among its contacts who might have need of transport services, in order to help them win extra business; I suppose that sometimes company ABC is not directly responsbile for freight arrangements, but some of its subsidiaries, customers, suppliers, etc. might well be.

The idea of 'visibility' to me suggests that they won't actually force people to use this freight company, but will make sure they know about them.

I have to say this is purely speculation, and I am not a specialist in this field.

Thanks, Paula!
agree Demi Ebrite : Visibility could be as subtle as simply not hiding who does their transport (a nod) or as bold as to use their choice as a sales feature. Either way, the transport company get the manufacturers endorsement to all of the customers they deliver to.

Thanks, Demi! Yes, indeed, covers quie a range of possibilities, doesn't it?
