headhunting

SYLLABICATION: head·hunt·ing
PRONUNCIATION: hdhntng
NOUN: 1. The custom of cutting off and preserving the heads of enemies as trophies. 2. Slang The process of attempting to remove influence and power from enemies, especially political enemies. 3. Informal a. The business of recruiting personnel, especially executive personnel, as for a corporation. b. The act or an instance of such recruiting.

neutral Peter Linton (X) : I can't entirely agree with MerriamW - as Lesley Clayton rightly points out, headhunting is recruiting specialists for particular jobs, not just top jobs. The key point is that it is by direct private telephone calls, not traditional recruitment methods.

Lars, you make an interesting point. Although the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is one of the best, it is still only one source. I have now cross-referenced it with the American Heritage Dictinoary, another excellent source. Please see its definition above.
agree Martine Brault : I would simply say "recruiting personnel"

neutral Armorel Young : recruiting seems much too general, whatever the dict. may say. Headhunting is going out and looking for the person you want to do a particular job, rather than advertising and waiting for people to apply to you.

True, but more often than not, at least according to the Merriam-Webster and the American Heritage dictionaries, the level of those being recruited or searched is at an executive level. - Mike :)

looking for suitable employees

Headhunting = the act of searching for human resources to be part of the workforce; headhunter = a person (or more usually an agency) that does this work. A very common term in HR.

While headhunting is indeed recruiting top-level people for top-level jobs, the people who are headhunted are usually in a top-level post already and are not necessarily looking to change. The headhunter approaches that person with an enticing (better) offer. Headhunters are looking for specific people for specific jobs, not just 'anyone' with suitable qualifications. It is very targeted.
Peer comment(s):

agree Peter Linton (X) : You are right, it is specific people for specific jobs, often but not always top-level. I used to work for a compter company, mid-level, and was headhunted (unsuccessfully) perhaps half a dozen times.

selective recruiting of personnel for high-level jobs who were not ostensibly looking for relocation

headhunting - selective recruiting of personnel for high-level jobs who were not ostensibly looking for relocation

Unless - of course - the group is of cannibalistic nature ;-)
