This point is relevant to the earlier genealogies of Genesis 5 and 11. Morris and Whitcomb argue that there is a possible gap between Eber and the generation of Joktan and Peleg (Genesis 10:25) by making the comparison with Exodus 6:20 concerning Moses and Aaron descending from Amram. But we have seen that Leviticus 10:4 shows this must be regarded as a tight genealogy and by the same token, so are Genesis 5, Genesis 10 and 11. We cannot insert names just where we please. He poses the question ‘Can the term “begot” imply only “descent” as with Matthew’s line?’ The answer is a clear ‘No’ since in these genealogies we are given extra details which exclude the possibility of missing generations.
Only by making the term ‘begot’ mean ***‘fathered the line leading to’***, could substantial gaps be argued for.
