You know, when you are laying in bed with your sweetheart, in fetal position, and your two bodies contour each other in a corporal embrace. You could both be sleeping or conversing.

It's not so much an erotic or sexual experience, but it is quite intimate.

Examples:
1) Glenda and Jorge spooned all night, and fell asleep in the middle of soft, secret conversation...
2) Bobby surprised himself when all he asked the older prostitute to do was perform a prolonged spooning session; his needs were emotional, he thought to himself.

It doesn't matter if there are terms that are slang-specific to certain countries. That's ok. I would like to know the different options in Spanish, from both sides of the Altlantic blue.

En México también he escuchado esa postura como "cucharita". Creo que "acurrucarse juntos", al menos para mí, no sugiere la idea de la posición fetal, al menos yo simplemente entendería "acurrucarse" como estar muy juntos, abrazados, pero no necesariamente en esta posición.

Barbarismo??? Ambas opciones están bien. La de Margaret es más neutral y la de Simon más regional (RP). Lo que me llama la atención es encontrar tanto purismo en los comentarios. Parece que hay gente que todavía vive en la edad media.

Deborah, Son una historia y una foto bonitas, pero por el lenguaje utilizado, es evidente que procede de un país latinoamericano (¿Argentina?). Por los mensajes recibidos, no se utiliza por este lado del Atlántico (España). La cuestión ahora es si "acurrucarse juntos" también se utiliza en esa parte del mundo.

@José Alejandro Why us? I have nothing against spooning, in any era, form or language. Quite the contrary. Of course, I probably didn't express myself clearly. I meant lovely-haha, amusing, quaint... I am very interested in how social customs and mores change over time. It's the part of history I like most. And I just love Deborah's 'train' image. Anyway, if you move back a few decades from the Victorian times, you find quite a different kettle of fish. The 18th century was much more open. As for local expressions, I think 'hacer cucharita' or 'dormir en cucharita' are probably the most usual down here.

Victorian era... Things are as they are since the first humanoids and monkeys existed.

But what we are trying to find is how to say it in Spanish. For what I understood from the webpages and texts posted, dormir en cucharita may involve sex or not, while hacer cuharita seems to be a sexual intercourse position.

Margaret, et. al..... This is US English. I don't have a specific target audience. I just need the different options in Spanish. I would love to see different slang terms from the different countries, if there are any. So far, the suggestions are great. Maybe we'll see more.

As far as the Victorians, well, I guess they just pushed their lovers off the bed, post-coitus. Pretty rude. But, what about Romeo and Juliet? They must have spooned at some point in their ill fated, short affair. What about that, patinba and Chriswa?

It depends on the era In Victorian England, spooning meant "to talk amourously in a sentimental or silly fashion" to quote the Shorter Oxford, and certainly did not mean to lie together in any way, which would have been inconceivable in polite society/literature of the time. A spooner was a "sentimental lover" (also Shorter Oxford).

Spooning in Spanish You say both sides of the Atlantic: here in Argentina both Simon and Margaret's answers would be fine. You could not use Deb's version from the portuguese, though. You'd be saying something quite different.

Que yo sepa, "hacer cucharita" no se entendería en España. No he puesto comentario alguno, ya que puede que sea yo la que nunca he escuchado esto en la zona donde vivo (Cataluña) y que tal vez en otra zona de España se entienda. ¿Puede alguien confirmar esto?

lo de imatahan... sobre dormir de conchinha (de concha) es hermoso. Como sabéis, cada pareja tiene su lenguaje inventado que suele usar únicamente entre los dos, y en el caso de mí y mi marido bautizamos esta posición de dormirse, "sleeping in the train position". (formando un tren...) De hecho es lo más cómodo de todas las posiciones e incluso la uso con mi nieto de 3 años a quien le cuesta dormirse sólo. A ver si lo del tren se podría adaptar al español.
