First, let's analyze "cod"

In the Random House we have:

cod2 (kod), n.
Slang (vulgar). testicle.
[bef. 1000; ME; OE codd; akin to ON koddi pillow]

I hope I am not offending anyone. Since the definition say the vulgar use for "testicle", of course that would be "ball", and I wrote some of the sociolinguistic equivalents in the Spanish language.

Does this make sense in the context? I believe so. With a notch in the rail before the first testicle, that would keep the hobble (shackle) from coasting, and thus facilitate the slaughterhouse process.
