A shotgun 'folds open' at the end of the barrel nearest to the user, the cartridges are loaded in to the barrel and then it is closed again....

So it isn't 'cargarla' but literally to close it after loading.

agree Oscar Knoblauch : Sí. Normalmente la escopeta se lleva cargada con cartuchos pero abierta para prevenir accidentes. Se cierra en el momento de usarla.

montar una escopeta [armar un fusil]

Yo usaría “montar”... “montó la escopeta”... aunque “cerrar” creo que también es válido.

In context, maybe "preparó la escopeta para tirar/disparar" may suffice...
