PREPARATION FOR YOUR IVP, UPPER GI, SMALL BOWEL or BARIUM ENEMA EXAM

Your doctor has ordered a special examination of your abdomen to be performed in the Radiology Department. This procedure requires fasting and may require you to take a prep to cleanse your bowel. The procedure takes approximately 30-60 minutes.

Listed below are the preparations for the various exams.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS CORRECTLY WILL RESULT IN YOUR EXAM BEING RESCHEDULED. Proper preparation is necessary to perform and obtain best results.

1. IVP (Kidney examination)
This exam requires the following prep: No fat, clear liquid diet the day before the exam. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight of the night prior to the exam. You will be given a bowel cleansing kit. Please review the instructions several days before your exam so that adequate exam preparation can be obtained.
An injection of iodine contrast will be required for this exam. The iodine is required to visualize the organs of the urinary tract. You will be required to have a blood test prior to having the exam to evaluate kidney function.
The technologist will explain the contrast injection and have you sign a consent form for the injection on the day of the exam.
