English term

mean, standard deviations

English to Spanish Other International Org/Dev/Coop UNDP - PNUD documentation on climate change
"Several types of statistical data can be used to describe current climate (e.g., mean, standard deviations, the frequency of extreme events)."

Gracias.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Marcelo González Jul 12, 2005:
Hola Maria Teresa. Jessica's right, the mean is one type of data, and the standard deviation another. However, to calculate standard deviation, which is the average distance (of scores/values) from the mean, you have to determine what the mean is first.
jrb Jul 11, 2005:
Hi Ma T, as I understand it, mean is one of the types of statistical data alongside standard deviation, as jipozzi says.
Son todos ejemplos de statistical data that can be used to describe current climate.

Hope it helps!

Standard deviation can also be calculated as the square root of the variance.
http://www.answers.com/standard deviation&r=67

After obtaining several standard deviations (in this way, which is not the only way to obtain a standard deviation) an average of these could be obtained, as well. Good luck!!

\"mean, standard deviations\" = the mean of the standard deviations you\'ve (first) obtained

Standard deviation often refers to the average distance from a mean (which is what most people think of when they hear the word average). In educational statistics, its importance might be seen on determining how far from the average score on a given test student grades are, so teachers can work accordingly (knowing how far they\'ve got to take students in their development). (At least for those teacher who actually do this, of course.) :-)
Peer comment(s):

neutral jrb : Hi Marcelo, I'm not quite sure that I follow your reasoning, but I would have thought that you would need to calcuate the mean first in order to get the SD, or simply work with the mean value(s), hence the separation?

Hi Jessica. Assuming there are various sets of data to work with, first you might get the means, then determine SD's, then, with these standard deviations, you get another mean (the average/mean of your standard deviations). This is my understanding. :-)
