I work mainly with Mexican audiences in the U.S. and have mostly chosen the latter. However, a check on altavista.com for each came up with 101 pages for mutuales and only 8 for mutualistas, FWIW.

According with the English-Spanish Banking Dictionary (Rafael Gil Esteban) the translation for Mutual Fund is "Fondo de Inversiones".

I like this translation becuase it captures the composite nature of a mutual fund; it is also the more common choice in Mexico. Other choices are fondo mutuo de inversion(es), or fondo común de inversión, depending on the target country.
