A stratified-wavy flow regime will predominate in the Shah Deniz gas export pipelines throughout their operation. Accordingly, the susceptibility of the pipeline to top of the line corrosion was assessed. As the gas flows along the flowline, water vapour will condense on the pipe wall forming a thin film and/or droplets. The condensed water can contain corrosive species such as CO2, H2S and organic acids leading to a very corrosive environment. It has been reported by some researchers that ToL corrosion becomes a threat to pipelines at water condensation rates greater than 0.25 g/m2s 8. At higher condensation rates it is hypothesised that it is significantly less probable that the condensing water will become supersaturated with iron carbonate and form a protective film.
