salut, buna, servus

"Servus" is used mostly in the central and western part of Romania. "Salut" also means "salute" or "greeting". You can use any of the above to translate "hello"."Buna" is short for "good morning/afternoon/day/evening" for it also means "good" in Romanian. (If the greeting is meant to be more formal than informal, I suggest you translate it as "Buna ziua!"/"Good day", "Buna dimineata!"/"Good morning!", "Buna seara!/Good evening!".)

neutral Elvira Stoianov : I am from the western part and we never say servus, we say ciao or salut

agree corin : Who would have thought that such a simple question would raise so many eyebrows. Any of the proposed answers is good for me who was born in servus-land, went to school in buna-city, and finished up in the continent of hello...

But did you ever say "ciao"? :-)
agree Florin Slavescu : Servus nu vine din latina - vezi DEX.

With all due respect Sir/Madam, even the Romanian Academy can be wrong. Servus isi are originea in latina - vezi Dictionarul Limbii Romane Moderne. Limba germana ar putea constitui o fliliera, dar ma indoiesc sincer. Poti sa imi spui de ce? ;-)

Peer comment(s):

agree Elena-Mirona Ciocirlie : Too bad you don't use "servus" (derived from Latin),but you are using "ciao" imported from Italy since the big post-communist Romanian migration.Bless!:-)For meaning of"servus" plz check a good Romanian dictionary.As for its use,it's a matter of choice.

I don't control which words should be used. And I don't have to check the dictionary, because i know what it means. I just guess the asker is interested in the spoken, not necessarily the artistic language.
