Blood Reinjection (Blood Doping, Blood Packing, and Blood Boosting)
Endurance, acclimatization, and altitude make increased metabolic demands on the body, which responds by increasing blood volume and the number of red blood cells to meet the increased aerobic demands.
Recently, researchers have replicated these physiological responses by removing 900 milliliters of blood, storing it, and reinfusing it after six weeks. The reason for waiting at least six weeks before re-infusion is that it takes that long for the athlete´s body to reestablish a normal hemoglobin and red blood cell concentration. Athletes using this method have significantly improved their endurance performance. From the standpoint of scientific research, such experimentation has merit and is of interest. However, not only is the use of such methods in competition unethical, but use by nonmedical personnel could prove to be dangerous, especially when a matched donor is used.
