English term

...draws whatever it enters tightly up against the...

English to Portuguese Medical Medical (general)
Lag screws have smooth shafts near the head and screw threads only on the distal portion. The intention is that the thread draws whatever it enters tightly up against the material near the proximal part.

Actually I was showing why your suggestion is wrong.

A "lag screw" is NOT by definition "self tapping" or "self threading" ..but there there are "self-tapping lag screws"

The point of using a lag screw is to pull something up tight against something else - not the fact that it may or may not be "self threading" - the majority are not.

The "capital A" was to point out the typo - only
- of course one would not type it that way in a text.

You are right, I am sorry!

To airmailrpl I think you are missing the point entirely. Please look at the sentence to be translated. You are just wandering around screws. I do not see any connection between your extensive explanations and the sentence. This ends here. I will not reply to any further comments.

Thank you for pointing out an obvious typing mistake but it should not be with a capital A

puxa o material em que entre até que fique apertado contra um outro material

draws whatever it enters tightly up against the material near the proximal part => puxa o material em que entre até que fique apertado contra um outro material

a lag screw draws the material tight up against another material - in this case it is probably a metal plate placed over a broken bone ...the bone is drawn up tight against the metal plate.

thus "a rosca retira tudo à sua volta à medida que vai entrando" is not the correct translation...nothing is being removed

A lag screw is not by defintion self tapping or self threading - actually the contrary is the most usual case for lag screws. - see the references

In medical applications self-tapping lag screws are being used

This study will compare the effect of time for the placement of traditional cortical screws to self-tapping lag screws, which is reported to eliminate the need for countersinking, overdrilling, and tapping. We hypothesized the self-tapping lag screw will require less or equal time for application than the traditional cortical fixation screw.

lag screw

Coach screw (UK) or lag screw/bolt (US)[18]
Similar to a wood screw except that it is generally much larger running to lengths up to 15 in (380 mm) with diameters from 0.25–0.5 in (6.3–13 mm) in commonly available (hardware store) sizes (not counting larger mining and civil engineering lags and lag bolts) and it generally has a hexagonal drive head. Lag bolts are designed for securely fastening heavy timbers (post and beams, timber railway trestles and bridges) to one another, or to fasten wood to masonry or concrete.
Lag bolts are usually used with an expanding insert called a lag in masonry or concrete walls, the lag manufactured with a hard metal jacket that bites into the sides of the drilled hole, and the inner metal in the lag being a softer alloy of lead, or zinc alloyed with soft iron. The coarse thread of a lag bolt and lag mesh and deform slightly making a secure near water tight anti-corroding mechanically strong fastening.

How to Install a Lag Screw
By C.L. Rease, eHow Contributor

A lag screw or lag bolt is used to provide a structural connection between two or more pieces of lumber. A lag screw has a ticker shaft than a normal screw or bolt and the threads around the shaft are large and coarse to ensure a heavy grab into the lumber. The screw threads are so strong that if you do not drill a pilot hole through the lumber, the head of the lag screw can snap off due to the excessive torque required to thread the lag screw into the lumber.
