"Charlie Chaplin, whose silent films were seen and understood throughout
the world, did not always succeed in communicating without words. One
evening in the 1920s at a Paris restaurant, Charlie enjoyed a shellfish dinner.
Afterward, he went for a stroll and suddenly was summoned by an urgent call of
nature. There was no bathroom in sight; in desperation, Chaplin grabbed the
first man he saw. Now in such pain, he was unable to speak and the comedic
actor used pantomime to explain his predicament. Slowly it dawned on the
passerby who the stranger was. "Mon Dieu, Charlie!" A crowd gathered, and thinking they were getting a free show cheered the Tramp as he continued his wild gestures. Finally, Charlie took off running with the mob following, ducked into a hotel, found a lavatory and, with his admirers pounding on the door, achieved blessed relief. When Chaplin came out, he walked away with quiet dignity, much to the disappointment of his fickle French fans who wanted more antics and began to boo him. )"
