English term

"My name is..."

Non-PRO English to Latin Other
Just out of pure interest, how would one say in Latin, "My name is Florianus"?
And yes, I am going to start learning Latin shorly, so all these questions will stop ^o^

est mihi nomen Florianus/est mihi nomen Floriano

This is the usual way of expressing it in classical Latin. In the first, 'Florianus' is in apposition with 'nomen'; in the second it is in apposition with 'mihi' (possessive dative).

The poets sometimes use 'clueo' ('I am called, I am named') + the nominative of a name, e.g., 'clueo Florianus'. 'Appellor' may be used in the same way in prose.

neutral Rowan Morrell : "Nomen" is a neuter noun, not masculine, so it should be "nomen meum".

Nomen meum Florianus est.

I think that's it. Nomen is a neuter noun, so the possessive adjective would be "meum" (as opposed to "meus" or "mea") to agree with it.

p.s.: I\'d go for \"mihi nomen est\", an idiom in the classical Latin

and, sometimes, you can have the dative also for your name, i.e.

mihi nomen est Floriano
