Definition
an acute,highly contagious,viral infection of
cloven-hooved
animals(cattle,deer,sheep,goats,pigs,etc)characterized
initially by vesicular lesions and subsequently by
erosions of the epithelium of the
mouth,nares,muzzle,feet,teats,udder,and rumen
pillars.Very rarely lesions of foot-and-mouth disease
occur in man(and have to be differentiated from
hand,foot-and-mouth disease)

fessa;
caratterizzata da lesioni vescicolari(o vescicole o
vescicole aftose o afte),successivamente da erosioni
dell'epitelio della bocca,delle narici,del musello,dei
piedi,dei capezzoli,della mammella e dei pilastri del
rumine

l'afta epizootica è causata da un enterovirus del
gruppo dei picornavirus,genera Aphthovirus;
se ne conoscono almeno 7 tipi immunologicamente
distinti,che sono stati classificati come
A,O,C,SAT(South African Territories)1,SAT 2,SAT
3 e Asia 1;
all'interno di questi sierotipi,sono stati identificati
oltre 60 sottotipi che sono in continua evoluzione
riuscendo a vincere l'immunità di animali
precedentemente infettati o vaccinati
