Salve a tutti,
sto effettuando una revisione di un documento di argomento medico (istruzioni per il Centro di uno studio clinico). Mi trovo davanti alla seguente frase:
NOTE:Please contact your CRA or the XXXXXXX if you are expecting a bolus of patients (i.e. more than 2 patients being in the screening phase at the same time at one study site) and need an additional shipment, or if you have any concerns regarding the level of supply at your site.
Il traduttore ha tradotto "if you are expecting a bolus of patients" con "nel caso si preveda una somministrazione in bolo". A me però non torna: mi sembra che in questo caso, "a bolus of patients" stia a significare "una grande quantità di pazienti" o semplicemente un "accavallarsi" di pazienti, non credo che centri nulla il bolo inteso come somministrazione di un farmaco (in bolo). Ma i dizionari che ho consultato danno solo questa definizione di "bolo". Che ne dite?

anche senza certa, "nel caso in cui si preveda una concentrazione di pazienti"
secondo me il punto qui è che i pazienti arrivano *insieme* a un certo step, e non che sono *tanti*. ripeto, potrebbero essere anche 3, ma il fatto è che, in certo sito, un numero di pazienti maggiore del previsto arriva contemporaneamente alla stessa fase. per cui, per es., se hanno inviato a ogni ospedale 2 kit per fare i test relativi a quella fase, occorre richiederne altri. anzi, *un numero di pazienti maggiore del previsto* potrebbe essere un'altra traduzione.

p.s. il bolo alimentare, poi, è quell'ammasso di cibo che ci scende in gola quando mangiamo (molti uccelli lo rigurgitano per dar da mangiare ai piccoli). la sua caratteristica è di mescolare *insieme* per esempio pane e saliva, e non di essere composto da molti bocconi o da bocconi molto grossi - va bene anche una singola caramella piccolissima :)

d'accordo con te. Cioè i pazienti arrivano tutti insieme in uno stesso momento, tant'è vero che dice "more than 2 patients being in the screening phase at the same time at one study site".
Qualche riscontro, in cui come vedi spesso il termine è usato tra virgolette, quindi una deviazione al normale uso di "bolo":

direi anche moltitudine di pazienti. Se cerchi sul sito Treccani "massa", che corrisponde grossolanamente a bolo, vedrai che fa riferimento a moltitudine di persone. E' l'interpretazione più fedele all'originale
