Discussion

Tony M May 15, 2006:
It IS a very common mistake that has been around for about as long! Unless you can provide more context, this is the most likely possibility
Ghyslaine LE NAGARD (asker) May 15, 2006:
It is "megga" and not "Megger" this is taken from this company's advertising brochure and having been in the business for 50 years I very doubt that they would make such an obvious mistake.

contrôle au Megger / contrôle d'isolation

Normally, this would be an electrical service, I don't know if that's appropriate inyour context?

A 'Megger' (R) is a test instrument, classically used to make insualtion resistance measurements, though it does actually often have additional functions too.

This sort of testing is needed as part of routine checking, and also, of course, for new or modified installations.

Megger is a proprietary name (AFAIK), but is pretty clearly derived from 'meg(a)-ohm-meter', which has given rise to all sorts of variant spellings by us engineers who use it as part of our everyday jargon, but aren't necessarily all linguistic pedants like me!

agree Graham macLachlan : on the web I found plenty of mega-, megga- and megger-testing...

Thanks, Mactrad! Yes, it is so often used verbally, the homonym error is understandable, and some people seem to think it avoids the fact that 'Megger' is a proprietary name.
