persévération verbale

Perseverative Speech. Some children may repeat a sentence, phrase, or word over and over. This is often referred to as perseverative speech or just perseveration. For example, a child may speak to his mother, saying “go home, mommy, mommy, home mommy, home.” It is not known exactly why repetitive speech occurs, but it may be related to poor skills at finding the right word to express a thought (called word retrieval, explained below). Perseverative speech also occurs more frequently when children are anxious or frustrated. For example, when faced with a task that is difficult, children with fragile X syndrome may repeat “Put it in the bag…put it in the bag…put it in the bag…” over and over in an attempt to end the activity.
