Discussion

Michael GREEN Feb 18, 2009:
No problem .. Thank you Christiane. While I'm confident about "web" and "laize", I am not sure that I have understood what the source text is getting at, though it seems to be a description of a converting operation, probably a coater. But without illustrations (when will Proz have a facility for posting pics ?!), I'm not 100% sure about my suggested phrase (sens de déroulement de la laize).
Ho hum ....
Christiane Bujold Feb 18, 2009:
Just a proposition Thanks Micheal, you are right, and as you can see, I did not present my proposition as certainty. But, I tried to help. And thats what I found. However, I knew that was just a track to follow.
Michael GREEN Feb 18, 2009:
Michael GREEN Feb 18, 2009:
Not exactl y .. With respect, Christiane, we are talking about paper-making, not printing. The "web" here does not refer to a reel (bobine) but to the continuous "web" (laize) of paper on the machine (or coater). It is only a reel when it comes off the paper machine. Until then it is a "web" in EN and "laize" in FR.
Christiane Bujold Feb 18, 2009:
Viviane Brigato (asker) Feb 18, 2009:
Christiane Bujold Feb 18, 2009:
translation- Web run According to the comments of Mr. Green, web (syn. reel) is exactly translated by bobine. Could it be possible that some run have a different angle? Go to http://www.granddictionnaire.com/btml/fra/r_motclef/index800...
Michael GREEN Feb 18, 2009:
The reference to "coating mist" implies that we are talking about a coater - on-line or off-line - and it is possibly referring to the angle of the web as it goes through the coater.
Does that fit the context ?
Michael GREEN Feb 18, 2009:
I was 25 years in the paper industry, and "orientation of the web run" is meaningless to me - the "web" (or a reel) can only "run" in the "machine direction" - it cannot be "orientated" in any other direction.
So I suspect your source text is corrupt.
Michael GREEN Feb 18, 2009:
Usual question : can we have more context ?!
Has your source text been translated into EN from another language ?
In paper manufacturing, the "web" is the width of the paper as it runs through the paper machine.

déroulement de la laize

Notwithstanding my comments about the quality of the source text (see Clarification request above), since Asker's question concerns only the two words "web run", which is a common enough expression, this is my suggestion.
In order for the phrase "orientation of web run" to be meaningful, I would suggest the author meant "direction of the web run", which would be translated "sens de déroulement de la laize".
