agree writeaway : not just in the US everywhere, including France,UK etc. and is also a big item in Italy too (used it to wash fruit and veg among other things). right off the supermarket shelves here in Belgium too-industrial quality and for cooking

levure chimique

Un boulanger / une ménagère dira plus volontiers "levure (chimique)", et non le terme scientifique bicarbonate de soude/ ou de sodium.

agree alx : exact, le langage courant dit "de la levure" tout simplement
