English term

prime gear

English to French Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
2nd gear (1.67:1) and 2nd prime (1.50:1) gear are so close in ratio that they are not considered to be different gear ratios, although both are used as 2nd gear under certain conditions.

Background

I'm afraid I can't find any French equivalent for this, but I can explain what it is (which you may know already).

In certain cars, e.g. the V8 Dodge Dakota, the car has a standard gear pattern when accelerating - 1,2,3,4, but when changing down the gears and decelerating hard (e.g. from 4th to 2nd), there is an 'additional' gear - 2nd prime - which engages, with a slightly higher gear ratio.

This does not seem to be a very wide-spread notion, and it may be that there is no model commonly found in France that has the 'extra' gear, in which case you will just have to translate literally, e.g. : "deuxième vitesse 'prime'". The reader is given an explanation of what exactly a 2nd prime gear is (in terms of ratio) in the sentence itself.
