Any suggestions as to what background might mean in this gasmonitor context? The term only appears once in the manual.

calibration is then verified for the specified range of temperature and pressure. There
is no need to calibrate the instrument upon reception. However, if the measured
concentration does not match an expected value or wet chemical control
measurements, the user may wish to recalibrate the instrument directly on the
process. Please note that after such a calibration the factory is relieved of
responsibility for correct instrument calibration in the specified range of gas
temperature and pressure. An O2 GasƒnMonitor can measure incorrect zero
level after such a calibration. This can happen if the new calibration constant does not
correspond to the *** background *** oxygen absorption in the receiver and transmitter units
and/or in the flanges.

Ben het eens het Marijn, maar ik denk dat 'ambiënt' een betere term zou zijn dan 'natuurlijk'. De term wordt in de techniek meestal gebruikt om bepaalde omgevingscondities aan te duiden. Naar mijn mening zou de term ook hier gebruikt kunnen worden.

Misschien kun je ook oplossen met zoiets als: het achtergrondniveau [of de achtergrondwaarde] voor zuurstofabsorptie in de ontvanger- en zendereenheden en/of de flenzen. In een octrooitekst zou ik z'n toevoeging niet aandurven, maar in handleiding zou het naar mijn mening wel kunnen. Je blijft dan in ieder geval vrij dicht bij de brontekst.

Bij het gebruik van background gaat het vaak om achtergrond. In dit geval zal het te maken hebben met de natuurlijke opname, absorptie van zuurstof in het materiaal zelf. Vaak is materiaal toch enigzins poreus of sponsachtig, waardoor die materialen gassen of vloeistoffen kunnen opnemen.
