Could be either, but probably female.
I suspect that at least a portion of its origin can be traced to the French word for kiss -- namely, baiser.
When a French man or woman says in French "I kiss you", he or she will say "Je te baise". The pronunciation of "baise" is nearly identical to that of how most native English speakers read the word "Bez".
Since names of affection can move in either direction, and sexual pairing is not always between a male and a female, it is difficult to say.
Notwithstanding, the name Bez is also very close to Beth, which is an abbreviation for Elizabeth -- a name often associated with Queens. Thus, I am guessing a female name or that of a male tranvestite.

Corrective spelling: The words \"Queens\" and \"tranvestite\" should have read \"queens\" and \"transvestite\".
