English term

without acquisition

English to Chinese Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology) Hortonworks
It attempts to drive a stake in the heart of Cloudera. This is true for a lot of reasons I don’t have space to discuss. Most important, however, is the potential for Apache Atlas and Ranger to unify security and governance for the big data ecosystem. {These can’t be proprietary because too many big software vendors like IBM and Microsoft don’t want to lock into a startup’s IP ***without acquisition***, which, as previously discussed, they can’t do.} They’d rather bet on the open source ecosystem. Which is why Hortonworks’ strategy is the winner.

The translation for "lock into" or "lock in" may be reworded as 受約束於/受制於/ 锁定在 to adapt to this text.
See: http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/lock in
clearwater (asker) Jun 15, 2017:
tanglsus Jun 15, 2017:
jyuan_us Jun 15, 2017:
lock into 就是簽協議啊 為什麼要be stuck with “鎖”這個字眼?
jyuan_us Jun 15, 2017:
Shieley Lao has 2 points 1. lock into something:
1[transitive] to come to a firm agreement that will last for some time and cannot be broken
http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/lock-into

2.The phrasal verb "lock into" here does not mean 受困

Agree with her.
Patrick Cheng Jun 15, 2017:
clearwater (asker) Jun 15, 2017:
我仍觉得在实际翻译时,应该先处理without acquisition,再处理don’t want to lock into a startup’s IP。
Patrick Cheng Jun 14, 2017:

Shirley Lao Jun 14, 2017:
It is true that these software vendors can use these inventions without actually acquiring the startup's intellectual property rights by paying patent fees. However, patent fees are high-priced and must be paid continuously for years before the patent right of the patent concerned expires. Moreover, this may lead to other rights if these software vendors develop or invent new technologies or systems using these patents.

The phrasal verb "lock into" here does not mean

"These can’t be proprietary because too many big software vendors like IBM and Microsoft don’t want to lock into a startup’s IP ***without acquisition***"

The above sentence means that big software vendors do not WANT to enter into some sort of agreement such as acquiring the startup's intellectual property rights and even the startup before they can use the startup's intellectual property rights like patents for the new technology like the open-source platform mentioned in this question. As a result, these big vendors prefer to use open-source technologies and systems, which are not proprietary and thus do not have the issue of intellectual property rights.

don't want to 不想 don’t want to lock into... without acquisition 不想未收购就受困于……
don't want to 不想
Frank Feng Jun 14, 2017:
后半句:acquisition, which, as previously discussed, they can’t do - 还是说他们不能收购;
They’d rather bet on the open source ecosystem - 与“open source”相反的做法就是“lock into a startup’s IP" - 锁定/局限在...IP上
clearwater (asker) Jun 14, 2017:
Frank Feng Jun 14, 2017:
clearwater (asker) Jun 14, 2017:

fyi
