You’ve got a whole stack of standards that cover a lot of complexity. As long as the standards are agreed upon, the users feel more comfortable. Right now people are looking at interoperability first. Next they’ll look at optimization and how efficient we can make XML. We haven’t tested the limits yet. There are still questions about when we should use Web services and when we should mix and match. All the different technologies—message-oriented middleware, enterprise service buses, Java, and Web services—are being pulled together. We’ll continue to have hybrid solutions of SOA mixed with traditional batch processing and even EDI.
