A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. For years, IP routing protocols have taken advantage of this fact — in the event of failure, data is re-routed around a downed link or router, eliminating reliance on the weak link. Unfortunately, voice calls are ‘real-time’ — they cannot have packets retransmitted. In fact, it is better not to retransmit a lost packet. For this reason, TCP (transmission control protocol), which reorders packets and ensures that lost packets are resent is not used while RTSP (real-time streaming protocol) is used for voice transmission.
