Dutch term

Seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag

Dutch to English Social Sciences Psychology
"Seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag is een verzamelnaam voor verschillende termen die iets zeggen over ongewenst seksueel gedrag. Drie criteria bepalen of seksueel (getint) gedrag grensoverschrijdend is: gelijkwaardigheid, toestemming en vrijwilligheid."

Some options I found so far are:

unacceptable sexual behaviour
unwanted sexual behaviour
offending sexual behaviour

I've seen it translated in these ways, but don't find these satisfying. Perhaps someone can offer an alternative of convincing evidence why one /is/ correct?

Discussion

Stuart Robertson Oct 12, 2010:
sexual misconduct / abuse? From the context, it seems quite clear that "grensoverschrijdend gedrag" is used here to denote "advances" (for want of a better word) at the very least. I think in this context it would therefore be incorrect to denote it simply as "behaviour", because behaviours can be carried out in solitary, which is not the case here. I therefore would be more inclined to opt for "misconduct" (out of the previous answers), however I might even go so far as to say that this is just another way of saying "sexual abuse", which wikipedia and other sources define as being "the forcing (vrijwilligheid) of undesired (toestemming) sexual behavior by one person upon another". This can be extrapolated into further categories, such as child sexual abuse, in any case frequently involving a "position of power/trust" (gelijkwaardigheid), such as a parent/older sibling-child, teacher-student, doctor-patient and other such relationships...

sexual misconduct

I am sure this is the term usually used.
Peer comment(s):

agree kamilw : this also conveys the original meaning of crossing the borders of acceptability

sexually aberrant behaviour

This is how I would have translated the phrase. This behaviour is beyond what normal people would be able to accept. Such a person exhibiting this behaviour would need to see a specialist.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tina Vonhof (X) : Grammatically incorrect, should be: aberrant sexual behaviour.

sexually objectionable behavior

Since the concept of "grensoverschrijdend" (literally, going beyond the boundaries) varies from culture to culture, and within cultures, the safest and most accurate way to characterize it is as "objectionable" (in that specific context).
Example sentence:

The incidence of sexually objectionable behavior in Alzheimer's disease ranges from 2% to 25%.

Peer comment(s):

agree Barend van Zadelhoff : Yes, it is culturally objectionable because of its not being based on "gelijkwaardigheid, toestemming en vrijwilligheid". This doesn't concern disorders but what happens in the workplace, the street, pubs and so on

agree kamilw : or "sexually unacceptable"

neutral Tina Vonhof (X) : This is grammatically incorrect, it should be: objectionable sexual behaviour. Even then, I don't think this is the best term.

Atypical Sexual Behaviour

Reading Assignment: Chapters 18 and 19

But if the parent(s) or another party are abusing the child, s/he may grow to engage in more atypical sexual behaviour.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tina Vonhof (X) : Atypical does not mean it is unacceptable.

I would be inclined to translate this in this way

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tina Vonhof (X) : Grammatically incorrect, should be: deviant sexual behaviour. // It is sexual behaviour that is deviant. Sexual and behaviour should be kept together. The website is also incorrect.

I don't think that it is grammatically incorrect: http://www.psychnet-uk.com/clinical_psychology/clinical_psyc...
disagree Bryan Crumpler : Sexual deviance = it deviates from the norm, and does not hold to it that it violates someone else's space as indicated by the evaluation criteria: reciprocation, consent & willingness. Has nothing to do with one's "deviant" sexual practices
