aftercreep
“In summary, we have documented the aftercreep from the 1979 Imperial Valley earthquake at these sites entirely as discrete events of rather uniform amplitude that occur with such decreasing frequency that the total displacement is presently well fitted by linear functions of log10t. Projecting the creep rate into the future suggests that afterslip from the earthquake should dominate creep processes on the Imperial fault for at least the next 6 years.”

Creep-at-depth and viscoelastic flow are not the only processes that can produce significant postseismic deformation. Some other candidates include surface aftercreep and poroelasticity.
