Note from asker:
That actually makes a lot of sense. I will wait for some more specific suggestions, but if I don't get any within the next hour or so, this will be my winner. Thanks a lot! |

: If you were to modify your answer slightly to 'structurally carved', I would completely agree. Try googling that expression ;-)

: I don't see how this covers the 'in structuur' part of the question.

: Ik neig hiernaar in dit geval. 'in structuur gesneden' is vaag, maar 'door snijden structuur/-uren aanbrengen in' ?? 'create certain structures/forms/imagery [in the wood] by carving'?? In combination with your ref + https://tinyurl.com/estzzzry

: This seems a bit of a stretch as a carved picture frame would normally be called a 'bewerkte fotolijst' in Dutch.

cut into shape
I may be wrong but this seems to me to be the plain meaning of your phrase. It is a photo frame which has been 'cut into shape'. What shape that may be is not detailed in the excerpt you have provided. If you have been supplied with photographs to accompany the text, check to see if my suggestion makes sense against the photo. I hope this solves your puzzlement...
Note from asker:
Thanks for your response! Unfortunately, I don't have any photos. That would certainly make the assignment a lot easier :) I'm afraid your interpretation is incorrect though (although I could be wrong too), because 'in structuur gesneden' would be a very strange way of saying that in Dutch. Since the source was written by a Dutch native, it seems highly unlikely that this is the intended meaning. My suspicion is that it has to do with the structure of the wood that the frame is made of. Perhaps the frame was cut parallel to the direction of the wood grain, or something like that. Still, I would have no idea what the technical term would be (either in Dutch or English). |

carved along the grain
I also think this might have something to do with the texture or grain of the wood. As you said: 'My suspicion is that it has to do with the structure of the wood that the frame is made of. Perhaps the frame was cut parallel to the direction of the wood grain, or something like that.'
Some examples of 'carved along the grain' (though with such little context to go on, it might be best to check with the client):
https://vatican.com/2/Posters-Prints-Pictures-Carved-Wood-Fr... "The entire design is carved along the grain of the wood from top to bottom."
http://earleygallery.net/glossary: "Woodcuts/Linocuts: A print made from the design being drawn on a flat block of smooth hardwood that is carved along the grain to eliminate the background and leave the image in relief."

the photo frame is embedded in the structure, whatever that structure may be - a desk, mirror, table.
Discussion
This leads me to think that Ruchira's suggestion may indeed be the correct meaning of the term.
Anyway, here is my proposed answer: 'carved along the grain'
Like the asker, I also think this might have something to do with the texture or grain of the wood.
As demalkin said: 'My suspicion is that it has to do with the structure of the wood that the frame is made of. Perhaps the frame was cut parallel to the direction of the wood grain, or something like that.'
