Dutch term

ondernemingsraad (OR) [in US English]

Dutch to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
So what do you call this if you are translating into US English, but the company in question is based in the Netherlands?

Discussion

Michael Beijer (asker) Sep 14, 2017:
what US companies call it themselves It seems US companies (such as Morrison & Foerster) also refer to it using the term "Works Council":

"The second category is candidates and members of the Works Council (“conseil d’entreprise”/“ondernemingsraad”) or the Committee for Prevention and Protection of the Workplace (“comité pour la prévention et la protection au travail”/“comité voor preventie en bescherming op het werk”)."

Thanks... yeah, that makes sense

Works council. As Natasha says, you're not trying to find a US equivalent of this European term, just as there's no UK equivalent of "district attorney" or "state trooper".
Natasha Ziada (X) Sep 13, 2017:
Works Council +1 I don't see a problem with using Works Council, especially since there is no clear US equivalency and you are dealing with a company based in NL.
Michael Beijer (asker) Sep 13, 2017:
PS: I've been translating this as Works Council for years (for both UK and US English), but since this is predominantly a EU/UK term, I'm wondering how other people handle this.

Proposed translations

8 hrs

local (e.g. plant-wide) formal employee committee for labour-management relations ("Works Council")

(I always thought that the "Works Council" was a labour-management committee, but the definition below says it is composed of labour representatives only.)

... a "shop-floor" organization representing workers that functions as a local/firm-level complement to trade unions

Note from asker:
Thanks for the link. ~~~ Am still pondering this. Since my text is about a Dutch firm though, I think it would be best to use the standard English translation of the Dutch term (ondernemingsraad) "works council".
