Dutch term

Symptoomreclame

Dutch to English Medical Advertising / Public Relations

Suggesties?

Discussion

writeaway Aug 14, 2010:
yes it is undesirable so symptom awareness is really not suitable here. I posted a ref below that explains the issue
adremco (asker) Aug 14, 2010:
Positive connotation Well, for one (and most importantly) "symptoomreclame" has a negative connotation, like "symptoombestrijding," whereas raising symptom awareness sounds to me like it's a good thing to do.

Second, the phrase "campaigns to raise symptom awareness" sounds like a bit of a long version of "symptoomreclame" and although that works as a header here, the word "symptoomreclame" occurs a million more times in the text and translating it as "campaigns to raise symptom awareness" will get boring very quickly.

Third, I imagine there must be a standard phrase in English for this, I'm sure the issue has been discussed outside The Netherlands. I just can't find it.
writeaway Aug 14, 2010:
raise symptom awareness sounds fine. what's wrong with it?

explanations

DTC advertising still seems a long way off on this side of the Atlantic, where it is mostly governments, rather than healthcare companies, who foot the drugs bills. But the first tentative steps have already been taken in that some drugs firms have begun ’symptom advertising’.

Symptom advertising is where a company will describe a medical

condition, discuss the fact that appropriate medication may be available

and perhaps show a company logo, but it does not mention the drug’s

name.

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : Here in Canada I see glowing advertisements for prescription drugs but they never mention what it is for, just 'ask your doctor if this drug is for you'. Maybe something to do with legislation....
