This sounds a little dated - or perhaps rather large-scale for Danish railways! But if you google, you will find it exists and is analogous to trunk calls (obsolescent for phone calls!) and trunk roads. It sounds like Indian Railways under the Raj to me, but was definitely used after Independence too!
Alternatively, you could say longer distance routes if this suits your target group better.
What is meant of course is the longer distance routes as opposed to commuters and local traffic on 'nærbaner'.
Inter-city routes are more express routes and would exclude some of the smaller and more peripheral stations - 'fjenbaner' is a wider concept.

This term was used by BaneDanmark in their April 26, 2004 documents names Railroad Maintenance FAB.

"long-distance rails" can also be used, apparently. After reading further in the document, I found the term "long-dstance rail", but since I don't have the Danish document available, I cannot see if this term is on the same page. The term was hyphenated as "long-distance"
