I asked severl native Americans and they dont understand magistrate.
Francis Fine Mar 12, 2005:
It is very important, as Kevin reminded us, to ask where is the translation going to be used. If it is for use in China, I agree with Weiwei's two Chinese translations, but do not favor the word "mayor."
Kelvin Wu Mar 11, 2005:
Assuming that the translation is meant for New Zealand and that you trust Wikipedia, then try

In Taiwan, it is called the "county magistrate". Here is the Legislative Yuan's website: www.roc-taiwan.org.za/ taiwan/5-gp/election2004/ele_2.html

It seems that the official English name in China is "Chief Executive, County Government". Here are a few government websites:

www.gdfao.gd.gov.cn/fyyd/cych/200301080013.htm
lygwb.lyg.gov.cn/cych.htm

Personally I do not think that "chief executive" fits here. "Mayor" might be a more appropriate choice.

Very interesting comments above from lance and jyuan. Personally I also think that \"magistrate\" is a very Chinese name. It reminds me of \"Bao Gong\". On the other hand, \"mayor\" is too Westernised, and the first person to come to my mind is Giuliani. :p I guess Jimmy\'s translation is to be used in NZ, so maybe \"mayor\" should be better. He\'ll have to judge. Whatever it is............... \"chief executive\" is out! ;-)
