The absence of other contributors confirms, in part, my belief that few Chinese have a very good notion of their own languages' grammar. Indeed, most Hong Kongers with whom I have discussed problems of grammar are often better able to discuss the grammar of the English language than they are their own. When one thinks that these sentences are taken from a grammar text written by university instructors, taking one's own grammar as a given is obviously a very big mistake. I did not find ChunBiao's explanation terribly helpful, but am of the belief now that both forms are correct. So, thanks!
