Grammatical Analysis
Sentence: 住在美國的時候,每天早上,我都到湖邊走走,那裡的風景真美。
First Attempt: When I was still living in the United States, I would go to the lake every morning and walk around. The scenery was very beautiful there.
Question: My question is about the construction 住在美國. Would it also be correct to write 在美國住?
If so, is there a reasonable explanation as to why the author might prefer one pattern over the other? Might that reason be what follows the author's selection -- namely, 的時候?
Please provide additional examples to support your explanation. The PRO aspect of this question is the completeness, reasonableness, and clarity of your explanation.

FYI
1. 按照汉语的语法席惯, 我们说"在美國(居)住的時候, ..."。但因为“在...的時候"是时间状语, 其位置非常灵活, 说"住在美國的時候"也没有错。
2. 如果前面已出现过"住在...的時候", 为了对称与句型一致, 则继续用这个句型是好的.
Hope this is helpful.

Comment: "Final Rendering: When I was still living in the United States, I would go to the lake every morning and walk around. It was very beautiful.
Acknowledgment: I would like to thank ChunBiao, wherestip and Gio for responding to my question. The absence of other contributors confirms, in part, my belief that few Chinese have a very good notion of their own languages' grammar. Indeed, most Hong Kongers with whom I have discussed problems of grammar are often better able to discuss the grammar of the English language than they are their own.
When one thinks that these sentences are taken from a grammar text written by university instructors, taking one's own grammar as a given is obviously a very big mistake.
I did not find ChunBiao's explanation terribly helpful, but am of the belief now that both forms are correct. So, thanks!
Discussion: Please see http://homepage.mac.com/moogoonghwa/tsongkit/part3/III-2b-g.html#s16 for further discussion regarding the context of this question.
