Side room in a Chinese 四合院 ; I know that in dictionaries it is translated as "wing room" but a native speaker has recently suggested that term doesn't sound right in English. Any suggestion?

if the siheyuan has only a single room 房间 each side, then main room, wing room would be OK. but if the shiheyuan has more than one room at the north, and at the sides, then main-rooms, wing-rooms; main building/wing building; main wing/side wing should be used.

IMO wing-room/wing-rooms are possibly not usual terms in English, but I think in relation to siheyuan, they could be used (why not?) - we are talking about Chinese architecture, so some specialist terms could be expected.

厢房 = 在正房前面两旁的房屋 (现代汉语词典)
厢 = 1 厢房eg 东厢;一正两厢 2 (~儿)类似房子隔间的地方eg车厢;包厢 (现代汉语词典)

Thanks. You may say "west wing" if you mean a building, or "west wing rooms" if you mean the rooms in that building.
