Should 'gift certificate' be translated literally to 'certificat de cadeau' in French? Do the Quebecois and the French even give gift certificates like Americans do? Thanks a lot!

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com (asker) Feb 24, 2005:
Oops! I tried to select both the French and the Canadian translations as correct. (I gave the French translation 4 points.) I could only select one correct answer. Is there anyway that both could be selected as correct since one is French from France and the other is French from Canada? Sorry for messing things up!

Nina a raison. C\'est certificat-cadeau avec un trait d\'union.

chèque-cadeau

It depends on the choice made by stores to call these. Although Termium and GDT do not recommand the use of "certificat-cadeau", I have seen it used often in stores. But I would go with "chèque-cadeau".
